Photomonitoring™ for Tunnels

Photomonitoring™

Photomonitoring™ for Tunnels

Tunnels are among the most complex infrastructures to monitor, especially during excavation when ground convergence and deformations can compromise stability. Traditional methods are often invasive, slow, or limited to point measurements.

Photomonitoring™ provides a non-contact, full-field solution for convergence monitoring. Using two high-resolution cameras and the proprietary IRIS software, the system acquires images at regular intervals, processes them in near real-time, and tracks deformations continuously throughout excavation.

flexibility

Multiple sensors and platforms

Photomonitoring™ is featured by a high flexibility thanks to the possibility to use data coming from different sensors and platforms as input data allowing sub-pixel accuracy in displacements monitoring.

Applications

  • Monitoring convergence and displacements in newly excavated sections.
  • Supporting early warning during excavation in unstable or high-risk zones.
  • Reducing the need for manual surveys in hazardous areas.

Advantages

Monitoring

Contactless monitoring, no physical targets required.

Analysis

Full-field analysis across the entire tunnel profile.

Updates

Continuous updates with high temporal resolution.

Automated

Automated photographic documentation of excavation progress.

A SUCCESSFUL EXAMPLE

During the Valfabbrica–Schifanoia road upgrade, Photomonitoring™ was deployed in tunnels such as Picchiarella and Casacastalda. The system provided reliable, near real-time convergence data, improving safety and supporting efficient construction in complex geological conditions.
